Is Social Media ruining the way we communicate?

It is interesting in discussions about Social Media that I have often heard it is ruining the way we communicate. Is it?

I have just sent an email to a family friend that I lost contact with over ten years ago. She found me via Facebook.

There was no falling out with this friend, no reason for us to stop communicating. There was just a fading that often happens with life. I moved away from our home town and visits back are now rare. She sent me a letter several years ago that I did not receive. Yesterday her husband popped up on my Facebook profile via a mutual friend and it has been lovely to catch up with her news and share mine. I have had the same experience with school friends and past work mates. All found via Facebook.

So, for today at least, Facebook has improved the communication in my life and allowed me to reconnect with someone that I care about. It works for me

We all need a little push

Fortunate enough today to have a coffee with sales guru Dave Staughton and, as usual, he was full of enthusiasm and inspiring ideas for taking any business (including MOM) to the next level.

It's always good to have someone give you a little push; to lift your head up from working in the business and think about what is required to move forward. Realised during our discussion that might require a step to the left....

Now have a whole head full of new ideas for exisitng clients and to bring some more into the MOM fold....getting started now.....

Content Management

A business owner was questioning the value of hiring a 16 year old to handle web content for the business, "After all, they know all this IT stuff".

There is no doubt that Gen Y and younger know there way around all things IT; social media, texting and blogging so this is half the battle in the ever changing world of technology.

It is important to remember that being able to hold the pencil and form the letters does not make anyone a great author. Your website, social media sites are no different to more traditional forms of marketing. They tell the world about your business and the author needs to have the skills to deliver the right message.

Before you entrust anyone to this job ask these questions;
Can they write engaging, market specific copy?
Do they understand the product and the target markets?
Sadly...can they spell and express well?

Unless the answer to all of these questions is a resounding YES, the job of presenting your business to the world is not for them....regardless of age
